SOUTH TONGU DISTRICT

The South Tongu District is one of the fifteen districts in the Volta Region.

It is located in the southern part of Volta Region. It is approximately 600 sq km in size, generally low lying, with lagoons and with the River Volta passing through it on its way to the Gulf Of Guinea.

The lagoons account for the marshy nature of the landscape in the southern section, and migratory birds come to the district. However, these wetlands need to be protected as rare species of animals and birds such as the sitatunga are becoming extinct. This marshy landscape is however good for the cultivation of crops such as okro, sugarcane and rice.
